That the said Thomas Smithers entered the Police force at its commencement in the month of May One thousand eight hundred and thirty and from his active services he was promoted to the rank of sergeant of the K Division on the thirteenth of August One thousand eight hundred and thirty
That on
the seventh day of October One Thousand eight hundred and forty-four the said Thomas Smithers proceeded to Her Majesty's Colony of Hong Kong, Inspector of Police having been recommended by the Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police to the Colonial Secretary for such appointment and he commenced duty on the Twenty-first day of April one thousand eight hundred and forty-five
That on the Thirty-first day of August one thousand eight hundred and forty-eight the said Thomas Smithers was dispatched for a cruise round the Island of Hong Kong
on the Colonial Surgeon's recommendation that the Convalescent Policemen under charge of the said Thomas Smithers have the benefit of the change of air
That during the time the said Thomas Smithers was in discharge of his duty on expedition a violent typhoon arose and the said Thomas Smithers, his only son aged twenty years together with six other Englishmen were lost and your petitioner is deprived of her means of support for
